November 29th, 2018.

For the sixth tutoring session with Byeongsoo Kim, we met and discussed a recent occurrence that happened to him and his family. He mentioned that his wife had gotten into a car accident. Thankfully, it was not a big deal, the damage was very minimal. I was surprised when I heard him use the expression, “traffic jam.” I encouraged him to continue to use that causal expression. Alongside this story, he also mentioned that he felt concerned at the moment because he would now have to speak English with those who might not have much patience. Most of all, he was concerned with speaking to insurance agents. He mentioned that he was most concerned with understanding numbers. While it was not the easiest thing for him to speak the specific number, it was even trickier for him to understand spoken numbers. I mentioned to him that numbers were always difficult when learning a new language. I mentioned that numbers are also seldom a fun topic to learn. However, it is something that seems scarier than it truly is. We momentary went through a few numbers in attempts to renew his confidence. We went over numbers such as: “1,200”; “4,550”; “78,000”; and several more. Some numbers were spoken while others were written.
