November 8th, 2018.

The second tutoring session with Byeongsoo Kim began with him asking me a question. He wanted to know why it was that Americans have such an infatuation with the military. Also, why it was that military personnel are regarded so highly. I tried to explain to him that it was simply something that was instilled in us since we are young. We are taught to understand that military personnel make the sacrifice so that the rest of us can enjoy our way of life. I explained to him that this was something that we are taught but it is also something that the majority of us believe. However, I also mentioned that the infatuation with the military in the U.S. can sometimes be taken to extremes. Byeongsoo tried to explain to me that in South Korea, there the degree of respect for the military is nowhere near what it is like in the U.S. In fact, he said that a great majority of younger Koreans do no respect the military. This would not be the first time that Byeongsoo would mention a divide between the younger generation of Koreans and the older generation. Throughout the session we reviewed certain words that related to the conversation, words that could help improve his vocabulary. These words included: "mischievous", "centralist", "generation gap", and "military personnel."
