November 6th, 2018.

For my first tutoring session, I met with Byeongsoo Kim. This was my first meeting with him, thus it was a diagnostic session. I asked Byeongsoo what it was that he wanted to work on most of all. He mentioned to me that he wanted to work on speaking and listening. He said that he feels fine when it comes to writing and reading, but feels that he needs to intensely practice his listening and speaking. He said that he plans on completing a master’s degree at FSU after completing a session at the CIES. He plans on completing a master’s degree in Public Administration. While he seemed eager to begin taking classes, he mentioned that he felt concerned that he would not be able to properly understand the lectures that he would be attending. What I found to be the most important thing that he said was that when we worked together, he wanted us to have a genuine conversation. What he meant was that he did not want me to speak too slowly or attempt to accommodate to much for him. He wanted me to be as natural as possible. After our meeting I remember thinking that his English-speaking skills were more than sufficient, but that his listening skills did need some work. I remember him speaking more than adequately, and for long durations of time, but whenever I would speak he seemed a bit lost.
