On November 5, 2018, I had my third Skype session with Dojun at 8:00 AM. He wanted to practice dialogues and speaking with me, so I offered five scenarios for him to choose from. The two scenarios he chose were related to the topic of traveling; one was at an airport and the other was at an American restaurant. I would give a brief synopsis to build up schema, and interact with him as a servicemember would address a tourist. While practicing the first scenario, he asked what the phrase "pushed back" meant. I gave a brief definition and explained that it was part of a group of phrasal verbs, and we took a few minutes to acquaint ourselves with them before returning to the scenario, where I intergrated more phrasal verbs. For example, I told Dojun "the pilot has come down with the flu, so the flight has been pushed back two hours until his replacement shows up." The other scenario was in an American restaurant, and I let him know the restaurant served American barbeque. When he asked what it was, I provided some images and sent a Youtube link for him to watch if he was interested. I explained the formalities involved in eating at American restaurants, including the fact that most restaurant servers will approach the table multiple times during your meal and ask how everything tastes. What I learned from this session was that the information your tutee provides about their reason to study is crucial to developing lessons they will be receptive towards.
