On October 31, 2018, I met Kwihun Cho at the CIES Building at 3:00. We walked over to the library and had a discussion about his work in Korea for the Ministry of Welfare in Sejong City. I asked him what working in a Korean governmental organization was like, and he asked me how to order food at a fast food restaurant. The session quickly turned to the topic of food and the skills of ordering at a register or over the phone. I wrote him a script and we roleplayed a scenario with him acting as a fast food restaurant patron while I played the role of cashier. We also practiced some phonemes and worked on differentiating between the "j" sound in refrigerator and the "z" sound in freezer, since the Korean language uses the letter "ㅈ" to refer to both in English loan words. We covered the pronunciation of pizza because it also is transcribed in Korean using the "ㅈ" sound in Korean. I noticed he received the information well and he later wrote me an email to thank me for my help. I learned that having a basic understanding of your tutee's language and background facilitates the tutoring process as it helps diagnose the "beautiful mistakes" the tutee may be prone to having.
