On November 7, 2018, I went to observe Angel Rios' Listening class at 2:00 PM. The topic of the lesson was United States history. The skill was a vocabulary reception excercise with listening comprehension questions. I was given the chance to introduce myself to a warm reception. The only materials used were the whiteboard, markers, and audio accompaniment for their workbooks. The lesson began with a vocabulary review, with each student writing one of the words on the board. Prof. Rios would then confirm the answers or ask students to correct the errors through peer review. Once all of the words on the board were correct, he began to ask students for definitions, including parts of speech. Every element of the lesson was centered around the students. After the review had finished, Professor Rios began a listening exercise for the students to listen to the differences between years like 1840, 1915, the 1840s, 1776, etc. The post lesson was workbook materials to prepare for the listening activity for the next day. I learned just how many different activities have potential to become student-centered activities.
