For this tutoring session, Maria and I met in Strozier library in order to discuss an essay she is working on.  The topic of her essay is the advantages of bilingualism. We continued to work on her topic paragraphs, which talked about three main advantages to bilingualism.  One problem we encountered was that sometimes Maria had trouble with prepositions such as “to,” “of,” and “ from.” For example, sentences like “one advantage to being bilingual is…” sometimes left her confused.  In addition to working through a number of these “beautiful mistakes,” Maria and I edited the Thesis of her essay to match her topic paragraphs better. Because English essays are written so much differently from Spanish essays, Maria’s biggest struggles involve the organization of her composition.  Her thesis and topic sentences were often a bit unclear or disconnected.
