My first class observation was Ah-Young Kim’s Level 4 Listening class.  The date I observed was October 29, 2018.  The class period was divided into three different sections: schema and vocabulary building activities, a video lecture, and comprehension questions. The topic of the class was sibling relationships—specifically birth order in regards to success.

The class started off with a few different exercises to help build background knowledge on the lecture.  These included discussion questions in regard to pictures, a vocabulary matching exercise, and a reading passage which I led aloud.  Through observing this class, I realized how important it is to build someone’s existing knowledge (schema) before exposing them to new information.  By practicing schema building, the class was not totally lost when they watched the video lecture because they were already familiar with the terms being used.  This allowed the students to freely take notes.  In the end, the students easily were able to answer all the comprehension questions.
